Short answer: On desktop, go to Settings → Account settings → Two-factor authentication and click Enable. Enter your password, scan the QR code with an authenticator app, confirm the six-digit code, and download the backup codes. Reddit supports authenticator apps only — there is no SMS option, which is unusually sensible.

Why bother securing a Reddit account?

The instinctive answer is “it’s just Reddit”. Three reasons that turns out to be wrong.

Account age is a commodity. Established accounts with karma and history are bought and sold precisely because they can post in subreddits that block new accounts. Yours is worth money to someone running spam, crypto scams or astroturfing campaigns — and the reputation being spent is attached to your username.

Moderators are targeted deliberately. If you mod a subreddit of any size, your account controls the settings, the automod configuration, and the ability to remove other mods. Subreddit takeovers happen, and they start with one moderator’s password.

Pseudonymity is fragile. Many people post things under a Reddit handle they would not attach to their name — health questions, workplace complaints, personal circumstances. An account takeover exposes years of comment history along with any private messages, and the deanonymisation risk is real.

Step 1: Open two-factor settings

  1. Sign in at reddit.com on desktop.
  2. Click your avatar (top right) → Settings.
  3. Open the Account settings tab.
  4. Scroll to Two-factor authentication and toggle it on / click Enable.
  5. Enter your password to continue.

Set this up on desktop. The mobile apps have historically been inconsistent about exposing the option, and the QR step is easier on a larger screen anyway.

One prerequisite: your account needs a verified email address. If you created the account without one — Reddit allows this — add and verify an email first, or you will have no recovery path at all.

Step 2: Scan and confirm

Reddit displays a QR code with a text key beneath it.

  1. Open your authenticator app and add a new account.
  2. Scan the code, or copy the key and use manual entry — see how to enter a setup key manually.
  3. Type the six digits into Reddit to confirm.

Any standard TOTP app works: Google Authenticator, Authy, Aegis, 2FAS, Microsoft Authenticator, or a password manager. See the best authenticator apps, or on iPhone, the best 2FA apps for iPhone.

Do not screenshot the QR code. It contains your raw secret key, and anyone with that image can generate valid codes forever. If you want a second copy, scan it into two apps while it is on screen.

Step 3: Download the backup codes

Reddit generates a set of one-time backup codes immediately after setup. Download or copy them before leaving the page.

This matters more on Reddit than on most platforms, because Reddit’s account recovery is thin. There is no identity verification process, no support agent who can vouch for you — recovery runs through your verified email address and nothing else. Lose your phone and your codes, and your only route is the email reset.

Store them offline or in an encrypted vault: where to store 2FA backup codes safely. And make sure the recovery email itself has strong 2FA — see our Google account guide.

Step 4: Handle third-party apps and bots

If you use a third-party Reddit client, a bot, or a script with the API, check how it authenticates. Modern OAuth-based apps handle 2FA correctly. Older tools using direct password login may break, and some documentation suggests appending the code to your password as password:123456 — a legacy workaround.

Rather than weakening your setup to accommodate an old tool, prefer clients that use proper OAuth authorisation. And review what you have already authorised under Settings → Safety & Privacy → Manage third-party app authorisation, revoking anything unfamiliar.

Step 5: Tidy the rest of the account

If you moderate a subreddit, this is also the moment to check your mod team: require 2FA of the other moderators, and remove anyone inactive. Reddit lets subreddits see which mods have 2FA enabled — use it.

Frequently asked questions

Does Reddit support SMS 2FA?

No, and that is a good thing. Text codes are exposed to SIM swap attacks. Reddit went straight to authenticator apps, skipping the weaker option entirely — see SMS 2FA vs authenticator apps.

Can I enable 2FA from the Reddit mobile app?

Support has varied by version. If you cannot find the option, use a desktop browser — or a mobile browser in desktop mode. Once enabled, the apps prompt for your code normally.

Why does Reddit say my code is invalid?

Clock drift is the usual cause: your phone’s time has fallen out of sync. Turn on automatic network time in your date and time settings. Our guide to 2FA codes being rejected covers the rest.

What if I lose my phone and my backup codes?

You will need the password reset flow through your verified email. If you never added an email, there is realistically no way back — which is why step 1 mentions it. See recovering accounts after losing your 2FA phone.

Does 2FA protect my anonymity?

It protects the account from takeover, which is a meaningful part of it. It does nothing about what you post, or about correlations across your comment history. Keep the two concerns separate.

Does Reddit support passkeys or security keys?

Not for standard accounts at the time of writing, so the authenticator app is the strongest option available. Where passkeys are offered elsewhere, they are stronger — see phishing-resistant MFA.

The bottom line

Three minutes, on desktop, with the backup codes downloaded before you close the tab. Reddit’s recovery process is one of the thinnest of any major platform, so the codes and a verified, well-protected email address are doing more work here than usual. If you moderate anything, treat this as mandatory rather than optional.
