Short answer: To set up 2FA on TikTok, tap Profile → Menu (☰) → Settings and privacy → Security and permissions → 2-step verification, then turn it on and select your methods. TikTok asks you to pick at least two — choose Authenticator app plus email, and avoid relying on SMS alone.
Why TikTok accounts are worth stealing
Follower counts convert to money. A stolen account with an established audience gets resold, rebranded, or used to push crypto scams and fake giveaways to people who trust the handle. Creator accounts with Creator Fund earnings, brand deals or TikTok Shop attached have direct financial value on top. Most creators hold accounts elsewhere too — our guide to 2FA on X (Twitter) covers that one.
The usual entry point is not a brute-forced password. It is a fake “brand collaboration” email or DM with a link to a lookalike login page, or a “copyright strike — appeal here” message designed to panic you into signing in fast. Two-step verification does not make you immune to that, but it removes the far larger risk of a reused password from an unrelated breach opening your account automatically.
Step 1: Open 2-step verification
- Tap Profile, then the menu icon (☰) at the top right.
- Tap Settings and privacy.
- Tap Security and permissions (labelled Security or Security and account access in some versions).
- Tap 2-step verification.
TikTok’s menu labels shift between app versions and regions more than most platforms. If the wording differs, look for anything under Security — the feature is always called 2-step verification.
Step 2: Choose your methods
TikTok requires you to select at least two verification methods from:
- Authenticator app — a six-digit code generated offline on your device. Pick this first.
- Email — a code to your registered address. A reasonable second choice, provided that email account itself has strong 2FA.
- SMS — a text code. Convenient, but exposed to SIM swap attacks, where someone moves your number onto their SIM at the carrier.
- Password — offered as a “method” for accounts created via phone number or a social login that may not have one set.
The best combination for most people is authenticator app + email. If you must include SMS, treat your phone number as part of your security perimeter and add a port-out PIN with your carrier. Our comparison of SMS 2FA vs authenticator apps explains the gap between them.
Step 3: Set up the authenticator app
- Select Authenticator app and follow the prompt.
- TikTok displays a QR code and a text key. Scan the code with your authenticator, or copy the key and use your app’s manual-entry option — see how to enter a setup key manually, which is what you need when setting this up on the same phone.
- Enter the six digits your app generates to confirm.
Do not screenshot the QR code. It contains the raw secret key, and anyone with that image can generate valid codes for your account indefinitely — silently, with no sign anything is wrong. If you want a backup copy, scan the same code into a second app while it is still on screen.
Any standard app works: Google Authenticator, Authy, Microsoft Authenticator, 2FAS, Aegis, or a password manager with TOTP. On iPhone, see our ranking of the best 2FA apps for iPhone.
Step 4: Protect the email account behind it
TikTok does not issue printable backup codes the way Google or GitHub do. Your recovery path runs through your email address and phone number — which means those accounts are now load-bearing.
Make sure the email on your TikTok account:
- Has its own strong two-factor authentication (Google account setup guide).
- Is one you will still control in five years — not a work address or a defunct provider.
- Uses a password you have not reused anywhere else.
An attacker who reaches your email can walk through TikTok’s recovery flow regardless of your 2FA. The chain is only as strong as its weakest link, and for most people that link is an old email account.
Step 5: Check your devices and login activity
Under Security and permissions:
- Manage devices — review every device signed into your account and remove anything unfamiliar or long gone.
- Security alerts — TikTok logs recent security events here. Unexplained logins from unfamiliar locations mean your password is compromised, 2FA or not.
- Third-party apps — revoke analytics, scheduling and “follower tracker” tools you no longer use. Many hold posting permissions.
If you run a business or Shop account, also check who else has access and remove former staff or agencies. If you cross-post your videos, run the same checks on your other apps — see how to set up 2FA on Snapchat.
Frequently asked questions
Why does TikTok make me pick two methods?
Because it has no backup codes. A second method is TikTok’s substitute for a recovery route — if you lose access to one, the other gets you in. That is why choosing two you will genuinely retain access to matters more here than on other platforms.
Can I use Google Authenticator with TikTok?
Yes. TikTok uses standard TOTP, so any authenticator app works — see how TOTP codes work.
Why is TikTok rejecting my code?
Usually clock drift: your phone’s time has fallen out of sync with TikTok’s servers. Enable automatic network time in your date and time settings. Our guide to 2FA codes being rejected covers the other causes.
What if I lose my phone and my email?
You are into TikTok’s account recovery process, which is slow and heavily automated. Verify that the email and phone number on your account are current today rather than discovering they are stale during a lockout. Our guide on recovering accounts after losing your 2FA phone covers the general approach.
Does 2-step verification stop my videos being taken down?
No. It protects against unauthorised logins only. Moderation decisions and copyright claims are separate — and messages claiming otherwise, urging you to “verify your account to appeal”, are the phishing lure being used against creators right now.
Does TikTok support passkeys or security keys?
Not for standard consumer accounts at the time of writing. The authenticator app is the strongest option available. Where passkeys are offered elsewhere, they are stronger — see what phishing-resistant MFA is.
The bottom line
TikTok’s setup takes about three minutes, and the decision that matters is which two methods you pick. Authenticator app plus a well-protected email beats anything involving SMS. Then confirm your recovery email is current and clear out old devices — because without backup codes, that email is the only way back in.
